Salary: Remuneration based on experience ($20.50 for 30 hours per week)

2-Year Renewal Contract

Forest City Gallery (FCG) is an artist-run centre, founded in 1973 by a nationally recognized group of artists and musicians. FCG is committed to excellence in programming exhibitions and events that reflect and address recent developments in cultural production. Encompassing a diverse community of artists, FCG fosters relationships between artists at all stages of their careers, with a focus on emerging artists. FCG is committed to extending the discourse between established and experimental art forms. Responding to the rich history of artistic production in the Southern Ontario region, FCG advances relevant contemporary practices in visual/media arts, performance, literature and music amongst local, regional, national, and international arts communities. We invite qualified applicants to apply to the position of Gallery Director.

 THE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS

  • A minimum of two years experience (or equivalent) in the leadership of an artist-run space, public art gallery, or cultural institution with a proven track record of successful management;
  • A record of successful fund development, including grant writing for submission to Arts Councils;
  • An advanced degree or equivalent experience in fine arts, arts administration, curatorial studies, art history, or visual culture;
  • Experience managing other staff, interns, and volunteers;
  • Exemplary knowledge of contemporary art practices, CARFAC Canada & Ontario, and an understanding of artist-run culture;
  • A strong commitment to community, inclusivity and equity;
  • A record of successful budgetary and financial experience within a cultural institution in the nonprofit sector;
  • Knowledge of First Nations arts programming;
  • Excellent verbal skills, written communication skills, and a proven ability to work within groups/committees;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays when necessary;
  • Proficiency in a breadth of computer programs and applications for administrative skills, design skills, social media and web development;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the functional role of digital platforms, social media and web development for contemporary cultural institutions;
  • Confidence in the handling of artworks and installation of exhibitions.

 

 RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement the Gallery's artistic programming and administrative operations;
  • Articulate the organization’s vision, mission, and goals;
  • Produce all operating and project grants (and final reports) to maintain a healthy, transparent budget with the Gallery’s bookkeeper and Treasurer;
  • Research and identify new funding opportunities, as well as maintain and grow the organization’s donor base and fundraising capacities;
  • Direct the development and implementation of diverse programming in all areas of visual arts, media arts, and writing through collaboration with FCG’s Programming Committee;
  • Independently propose and curate an exhibition every two-years, as an additional (optional) benefit to the Gallery Director position;
  • Work with FCG’s Hear Here Committee to curate and organize music events highlighting local and Canadian musical acts;
  • Co-ordinate all exhibition logistics, including shipping, transportation, and travel activities of visiting artists and their works;
  • Oversee and schedule support for exhibition installation, including activities related to auxiliary events, such as media screenings, artist talks, literary, and music events;
  • Work with FCG’s Volunteer Coordinator to manage and schedule volunteers;
  • Implement and organize all gallery events and community outreach initiatives, including opening receptions, Hear Here events, lectures, screenings, and fundraising events;
  • Work with FCG’s Fundraising Chair to develop and implement fundraising strategies and events;
  • General administrative management activities including correspondence with exhibiting artists, speakers, submission applications, members and donors;
  • Network and liaise with advocacy groups locally, provincially, and nationally;
  • Maintain a clean, well organized, and safe working environment. Planning for future facility needs.

 

ADDITIONAL ASSETS

  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks software and CADAC
  • Website management abilities
  • Fluency in another language in addition to English
  • Access to a vehicle

Forest City Gallery is situated on the traditional land of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenausaune, Lenape, Huron-Wendat and Attawandaron peoples who have longstanding relationships to the region of southwestern Ontario and the City of London. In close proximity, there are three local First Nations communities: the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames, and Munsee Delaware Nation. In the region of southwestern Ontario, there are nine First Nations and a growing Indigenous urban population. We would like to recognize the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations and all of the Original peoples of Turtle Island (North America) to the development of Canada. This recognition is not itself a solution or resolution, but a vital step in the process toward reconciliation and acknowledgement, as expressed in the recommendations of the Truth & Reconciliation Committee.
