Call for Artists/Curators - FCG 2nd Annual Residency

Forest City Gallery’s 2019 annual artist residency is officially open! FCG is beyond excited to partner with Near North Mobile Media Lab (N2M2L) to invite one London-based and one visiting artist, curator, writer, and/or collective for a 6-7 week long research & production residency in London, ON. Residency participants do not need to finish a project in the allotted time, instead they are asked to present the production/research completed during an artist talk at the conclusion of the residency.

FCG is once again collaborating with H.B. Beal Secondary School to allow artists, writers, and curators to produce, educate, discuss, and collaborate with the next generation of artist leaders in London, ON. FCG will also be partnering with TAP Centre for Creativity for studio space for selected participants.

H.B Beal High School is known for BealArt, an arts-focused educational institution, complete with many various production facilities and studios. The BealArt program has university articulation agreements with universities across Canada. Grade 12+ (1 and 2 years after grade 12) courses at Beal Art include Studio Practice (one year intensive) and Specialist (one year intensive) that prepare students for post-secondary and professional practice.

Support: Two months of free studio space from the TAP Centre for Creativity. Chosen participants will be awarded a stipend of $1000 (CAN). Accommodation compensation of $1000 (CAN) will be given to out-of-London artists. Monthly City Bus Pass provided. Scheduled access to printmaking equipment, ceramic equipment, woodshop, mechanical shop all with a range of basic hand tools and resources. Artists will participate in public programming in the form of an artist talk or workshop, open studio tours, or other discussed/proposed outreach initiatives.

Costs: Artists will be responsible for covering costs associated with purchase of materials, shipment of artwork/supplies, travel costs, and living+
subsistence expenses.

Location: London, Ontario, Canada (The traditional territory of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat, Attawandaron and Lenape Indigenous peoples).

Host: Forest City Gallery -- Forest City Gallery (FCG) is an artist-run centre founded on artistic autonomy with a commitment to excellence in programming exhibitions and events that reflect and address recent developments in cultural production. FCG serves to foster and support contemporary art, promoting dialogue amongst local, regional, and international arts communities. FCG represents artists of all disciplines and career levels with a focus on emergent artists and practices.

Expectations: Selected participants are expected to work at least two days at H.B Beal High School , along with studio time at TAP Centre for Creativity. They will also be expected to participate in a final end-of-residency presentation where each participant presents their production/research to the London community. Selected residency participants will also be expected to discuss their respective practice with students and interested adolescents in order to contextualize, educate, and inform about the various issues and themes present. This would take place through workshops, art talks, critiques, studio visits, and/or other activities during the duration of the residency (to be discussed with selected artists).

The Near North Mobile Media Lab actively promotes media arts access for all artists, regardless of age, class, gender, sexual orientation, race or ability. We provide the tools that media artists, students, and media arts audiences in Northern Ontario need to produce, present and enjoy all forms of contemporary media art. We envision a thriving media arts community in northern Ontario that produces innovative work, has access to contemporary presentations, and is an active participant in a national discourse by overcoming regional limitations.

Duration: 6-7 weeks, Oct - Nov 2019

Eligibility: Open to London/surrounding region (Ontario), as well as Northern-Ontario based artists working in a range of disciplines including but not limited to the visual arts, music, composition, new media, interdisciplinary arts, curatorial, and writing. Artists from all levels in their career who exhibit a strong professional work ethic and a collaborative attitude are invited to apply.

Submission information:

Proposal (400 word max): Describe the nature of the work you would like to produce while in residence. Please express why you would like to carry out this work in London, in with BealArt, and/or with the support of Forest City Gallery.

Artist Statement: (300 word max): Describe your overall practice and how it relates to the specific interests you are pursuing in your proposed program of work for the residency.
