Saturday, January 11, 2014

1:00- 2:00 PM

Artist Marigold Santos will speak about her exhibition still at Forest City Gallery.

About the exhibition:

Forest City Gallery presents an exhibition featuring works by artist Marigold Santos titled still. This show explores the ways in which ideas of self can become multiple, fragmented, and dislocated and then re-invented and created through a reflection of what is considered home. Marigold situates her work within the realm of play between the narratives of past and present. In the re-telling and reconfiguring of these narratives, they transform to become personal myth whose imagery functions in the fantastical and otherworldly. In this exhibition, the fragmented and multiple self is investigated through a hybridization of Filipino and Western folklore, pop culture, science fiction, geological processes, tropical and North American landscapes, and decomposition and decay. These themes coincide with references to childhood games that attempt to connect and communicate with the supernatural to bring what is not of the home, into what is the home – suggesting boundaries crossed in favor of testing limits and gauging what to fear and believe, and how to make sense of the unknowable.

About the artist:

Marigold Santos pursues an inter-disciplinary art practice involving drawn and printed works, sculpture, animation, and sound. Her imagery arises from folklore of east and west, pop culture, science, and personal myth reconfigured into the supernatural and the otherworldly, and considers the particular experience of migration and the fragmented/multiple self. She holds a BFA with Honours from the University of Calgary, and completed her MFA from Concordia University in Montréal, Quebec, in 2011. She is a recipient of numerous awards such as the Faculty of Fine Arts Fellowship, and has exhibited her work across Canada, United States, and Japan. Most recently, her haunted / talisman series was featured in solo exhibitions in Parisian Laundry’s Bunker Space, and at ACE art in Winnipeg. Her upcoming projects include a solo exhibition at the Khyber Center for the Arts (Halifax) in the fall of 2012, and a two-person exhibition in Calgary’s TRUCK Gallery in 2013. She currently resides and practices in Montréal, Quebec.
