Roots & Branches: Walking Through the Fifty Years of Forest City Gallery

August 3 - August 22, 2024

Curated by Yijing Li

Closing Reception: Thursday, August 22nd, 5-7pm

This exhibition invites visitors to embark on a visual exploration of the tree ring logos that have come to symbolize the enduring spirit and rich history of Forest City Gallery on its 50th anniversary. In 1973, Forest City Gallery was founded as a catalyst for the development of artist-run culture. Central to its identity is the iconic tree ring logo—a powerful emblem of growth, community, and artistic vitality. The original tree-ring logo of Forest City Gallery was designed by Robert Fones. Like the concentric circles of a tree trunk, FCG's logos reflect the passage of time, bearing witness to the gallery's evolution, maturation, and continued growth.

Archival materials have been sourced from the archives of Forest City Gallery, as well as local indie publishing archives from the Michael Niederman Collection at Western University's Archives and Special Collections, the What Wave Archives (courtesy of Dave and Rena O'Halleran), and local print ephemera from the McIntosh Gallery's Resources and Research Collection.

Image shows materials from FCG's Archives, housed at Western University's Archives and Special Collections.

Special thanks to archivist Amanda Jamieson.

Join us for the Closing Reception on Thursday, August 22nd from 5-7pm!
